How can a singer smash a wine glass using nothing but their voice?

You have probably seen it in a film: an opera singer holds one high note, the glass on the table starts to shimmer, and then it bursts into pieces. No hand touches it. Only the voice. So how can a sound, which is just moving air, break solid glass?
