How can a small child lift a much heavier adult on a seesaw?

Picture a small child on one end of a seesaw and a grown adult on the other. You would bet the adult drops like a stone and the child flies up helplessly. But slide the child right out to the very end, and suddenly the little one can lift the adult clean off the ground. How can someone so light win?
