How did the very first plants manage to leave the water and live on dry land?

Hundreds of millions of years ago, every plant lived in water. Then, slowly, some crept out onto bare, dry land, where nothing had grown before. But water holds a plant up and keeps it wet, and land does neither. So how did those first plants survive stepping out of the water?
