How does a cat see in a room that looks pitch black to you?

You walk into a room so dark you have to feel along the wall, yet your cat strolls across it as if the light were on, never bumping the furniture. To you it is pitch black. To the cat it plainly is not. How does a cat see when there is almost no light to see by?
