Mystery #4Tier 1telescopes and light

How does a telescope reveal faint stars your eyes could never spot?

Look up on a clear night and you see a scattering of stars. But point a big telescope at the very same patch of black sky and suddenly thousands more appear, stars far too faint for your eyes alone. They were there the whole time. So how does a telescope reveal stars you could never see by yourself?
