When a plant or animal dies, how do microbes tidy it all away?

Think of all the leaves that fall every autumn, and every creature that dies in a wood. Year after year, you might expect the forest floor to pile higher and higher. Yet somehow it never does. Something clears the dead away and makes room for new life. What could be tidying up the whole forest?
