How does a microscope let us see a world too small for our eyes?

For thousands of years, nobody knew that germs existed. Then someone looked through a curved piece of glass and gasped: a drop of plain pond water was alive with wriggling creatures. Nothing about the water itself had changed. So what did that little piece of glass actually do?
