How can scientists tell which animals are close cousins on the family tree?

Look at a family photo and you can often guess who is related: the same nose, the same smile. Scientists do something similar for the whole animal kingdom, working out which creatures are close cousins. But animals cannot show you a family album, so how on Earth do they tell?
