How does your ear turn a wobble in the air into a sound you can hear?

A friend whispers your name from across the room, and somehow you hear it. But all that actually reached you was a bit of air jiggling back and forth. Your ear has to catch that tiny wobble and turn it into a name inside your head. How on earth does it do that?
