Mystery #3Tier 2magnetism

How does a compass always find north?

Spin a compass round and round, set it down anywhere on Earth, a forest, a boat, the middle of a desert, and its little needle swings about, then settles, pointing the same way every time: north. Nobody set it. There's no signal, no battery. How does a sliver of metal know which way north is, all on its own?
