A light-year sounds like a stretch of time, so why is it really a distance?

You've probably heard that a star is 'a thousand light-years from Earth' or that a spaceship is 'four light-years away'. It sounds like you are counting years, the way you count birthdays or school terms. But a light-year is not an amount of time at all. So what is it actually measuring?
