What makes the sky glow with green and pink northern lights?

In the far north, on certain dark nights, the sky comes alive. Great curtains of green and pink light ripple and dance overhead, glowing and fading as if the air itself were on fire, though nothing is burning at all. People travel thousands of miles just to stand and watch them. So what paints the night sky with these shimmering colours?
