What is a shooting star, really?

On a dark clear night you might catch a sudden bright streak flashing across the sky and gone in less than a second. People call it a shooting star and make a wish. But here's the surprise: it isn't a star at all, and the speck that made it is usually smaller than a grain of rice. So how does something the size of a crumb light up the whole sky?
