Where do all the countless grains of sand on a beach actually come from?

A single beach can hold more grains of sand than there are stars you could ever hope to count. Each grain is tiny, hard and often beautifully rounded. They did not simply appear, and sand is not made in a factory. So where do all the countless grains of sand on a beach actually come from?
