Mystery #4Tier 2energy / motion

Where does all the energy go when a car brakes?

A car speeding along has a huge amount of energy in its motion, enough to do real damage. Then the driver brakes, and within seconds the car is sitting still. All that energy of motion is simply gone. But energy can't just vanish. So where did a tonne of speeding metal's worth of energy actually go?
