Mystery #1Tier 1animal colours

Why are flamingos a beautiful pink when their chicks hatch out grey?

A baby flamingo breaks out of its egg looking nothing like its parents: it is a fluffy ball of grey. Yet a few years later it stands tall in a coat of gorgeous pink. Nobody paints it, and it does not swap its grey feathers for pink ones overnight. So where does all that colour come from?
