Mystery #4Tier 3magnetic metals

Why does a magnet grab iron and steel but ignore copper, gold and aluminium?

Wave a magnet over a pile of odds and ends and it is fussy about what it grabs. A steel paperclip leaps up to meet it. But a copper coin, a gold ring and a strip of aluminium foil just lie there, completely ignored. They are all metals, so why does a magnet grab some of them and snub the rest?
