Why are some atoms perfectly steady while others slowly fall apart?

Most atoms sit quietly for ever and never change. But a few, like certain kinds of uranium, slowly break themselves apart, giving off energy as they go. Same sort of building blocks, wildly different behaviour. So why are some atoms rock-steady while others just cannot keep still?
