Why do a feather and a hammer land together on the Moon?

Drop a feather and a hammer on Earth and the hammer thuds straight down while the feather dawdles in the air. But astronauts on the Moon tried exactly this, and the feather and the hammer hit the ground at the very same moment. What is the Moon doing that Earth is not?
