Why do so many animals choose to live crowded together in big groups?

Out on the plains, thousands of wildebeest move as one great herd. In the sky, starlings swirl in flocks of many thousands. Under the waves, fish gather in shimmering shoals. Living squashed together sounds noisy and crowded, so why do so many animals choose it?
