Mystery #2Tier 1space / spacesuits

Why can't an astronaut just step outside the spacecraft in ordinary clothes?

Space begins only about a hundred kilometres straight up, shorter than many car journeys. Yet an astronaut cannot simply pop the hatch and lean out in a jumper and jeans, not even for a single second. A spacesuit is stiff, enormous and takes hours to put on. Why go to all that trouble just to step outside?
