Mystery #2Tier 2sound and pitch

Why does a huge double bass rumble low while a tiny violin sings high?

A double bass is taller than you and grumbles away at the bottom of the music. A violin is small enough to tuck under your chin, and it sings right up high. Line up any family of instruments and the pattern holds: the big ones go low, the little ones go high. Why should the size of an instrument decide how high or low it sounds?
