Mystery #1Tier 2animals / birds / life cycles

Why do birds lay eggs instead of carrying their babies inside like we do?

You began life growing safely inside your mum for months. A baby bird grows inside a hard-shelled egg instead, out in a chilly nest. In fact no bird alive gives birth to live babies the way we do, even though some other backboned animals, like many snakes, manage it. So why does every bird lay an egg instead?
