Mystery #1Tier 1-2Sun, Moon & Earth / shadows

Why do eclipses happen?

Once in a while, in the middle of a clear afternoon, the Sun vanishes. The sky goes dim, the air turns cold, birds fall silent, and a black disc with a shimmering halo hangs where the Sun should be. A few minutes later daylight floods back as if nothing happened. No clouds did this. Something out in space slid silently in front of our star.
