Why does mixing lots of bright paints together give muddy brown?

Each paint in your set is gorgeous on its own: a fiery red, a sunny yellow, a deep ocean blue. So you would think that swirling all your best colours together would make something even more dazzling. Instead you get a sad, gloomy brown every single time. Where did all that brightness go?
