Why do onions make you cry?

You're not sad. Nothing has upset you. Yet the moment you start chopping an onion, your eyes sting, water, and tears roll down your cheeks all on their own. A whole, uncut onion sitting in the bowl does nothing. So why does slicing one turn an ordinary vegetable into something that makes you cry?
