Why is nearly every plant built from the same three parts: roots, stem and leaves?

A daisy, an oak tree and a blade of grass look nothing alike. Yet look closely and each is built from the same three pieces: roots below, a stem in the middle, and leaves on top. Why do such different plants all share this same simple design?
