Mystery #2Tier 1plants / defences

Why are so many plants covered in sharp thorns and spikes?

A rose looks soft and gentle, yet its stem is armed with sharp thorns. Cacti bristle with spines, brambles grab at your jumper, and holly leaves are tipped with prickles. None of these plants can run, hide or bite. So why have so many of them bothered to grow their very own set of weapons?
