Mystery #2Tier 2hibernation / winter / energy

Why do some animals sleep right through the whole winter?

As the cold months close in, some animals do something astonishing: they crawl into a burrow, curl up tight, and crawl into a nest, curl up tight, and slow themselves almost to a stop for the whole winter. They barely breathe. They do not eat a single crumb for months. Why would an animal choose to sleep through half a year of its life?
