Why do the continents look like they could slot together like a jigsaw?

Pull up a map of the world and look closely at the edges of the continents. The bulge of South America seems to fit snugly into the dip of Africa, as if they were two pieces of the same puzzle pulled apart. Dozens of coastlines around the globe seem to match up like that. Is it just a coincidence, or were they once joined?
