Why does the room keep spinning for a moment after you stop twirling?

You spin round and round in the garden, laughing, then stop. But the world does not stop with you: the trees, the fence and the sky keep sliding past for a few giddy seconds, and you stagger about trying not to topple over. You have stopped moving, so why does everything still seem to be spinning?
