Mystery #3Tier 2-3physics, projectiles, aiming

Why must you aim above a faraway target to actually hit it?

Try tossing a ball to someone right across a big garden, pointing it straight at their hands. It thumps into the ground well before it reaches them, landing low and short. To get it into their hands you have to aim well above their head, into empty air. Why does pointing straight at a distant target make you miss underneath it?
