Why do growing children and healing wounds both need protein?

You can run around all day on a bowl of pasta, but no amount of pasta will heal a scraped knee or make you a centimetre taller. For that, your body demands something else: protein, from eggs, beans or meat. Why can some foods be burned for energy while only certain ones can actually rebuild you?
