Why does a giant steel ship float when a tiny coin sinks?

Drop a small coin in water and it sinks instantly. Yet a cargo ship made of thousands of tonnes of steel, far, far heavier than the coin, floats just fine. If heavy things sink, how does the much heavier one stay on top?
