Mystery #3Tier 2simple machines / levers

Why does a long spanner loosen a stiff bolt when a short one will not budge it?

A bolt is done up so tight it will not move. You grab a short spanner, heave with all your might, and nothing happens. Then you fit a longer spanner onto the very same bolt, pull with the very same arm, and it cracks loose with ease. Your muscles did not get any stronger, so what changed?
