Mystery #1Tier 1light / colour

A red apple sits in plain white light, so where does the red come from?

A red apple is lit by ordinary white light, and white is not red. Yet the apple glows a deep, ripe red anyway. Nobody painted extra red onto it, and the light shining on it has no red label. So where is that red actually coming from?
