Why does a thrown ball always arc downward instead of flying in a straight line?

Throw a ball as hard and as flat as you like, and it never keeps going in a dead straight line. Sooner or later its path bends and curves back towards the ground, tracing a smooth arch through the air. You did not tell it to turn, so something else must be steering it. What bends the ball's path downward?
