Why does catching a hard ball hurt less if you sweep your hands back as you catch it?

A cricket ball comes flying at your hands, hard and fast. If you hold your hands stiff and still, catching it stings like mad. But if you sweep your hands backwards as the ball arrives, riding along with it, the very same fast ball barely hurts at all. Why does moving your hands back take the sting away?
