Mystery #3Tier 3ecosystems / food chains

Why can removing one species wreck a whole food chain?

You'd think losing one animal from a habitat would just mean 'one less animal'. Yet remove a single species, like wolves from a valley, and forests and dozens of other animals can change beyond recognition. How can one species matter that much?
