Mystery #4Tier 2materials / wood

Why does wood split easily along its length but not across it?

Try to imagine tearing a plank of wood. Split it the long way, from end to end, and it comes apart fairly easily. But try to snap it across the middle and it fights you hard. It is the same piece of wood either way. So why is one direction so much easier than the other?
