A whale looks just like a giant fish, so why is it really closer kin to a hippo?

A whale glides through the ocean with fins and a tail, as sleek and silvery as any fish. For hundreds of years people simply called it a big fish. But scientists say a whale's closest living relative is the hippopotamus, a chunky animal that wallows in mud. How can that possibly be true?
