Mystery #2Tier 2Earth / space

Why is summer warmer than winter?

It seems obvious that summer must be when Earth is closest to the Sun. But here's the twist: when it's summer for you, it's winter on the other half of the planet at the very same time, and Earth is slightly farther from the Sun during northern summer. So if it isn't distance, what makes summer hot?
