Why isn't glass a crystal?

Salt, sugar and quartz are all crystals, with neat flat faces and hidden patterns inside. Glass is hard and solid too, yet it has no faces, no crystal shape, and you can see straight through it. Some people even claim old window glass is secretly a slow-flowing liquid. So what exactly is glass, if it isn't a crystal?
